Hyundai continued its run of
record-breaking American sales months in August, while the Montgomery assembly
plant hit a six-month high in production to feed that demand.
Hyundai
Motor America reported its best August sales month in company history
Wednesday, with sales up six percent year-over-year to 70,003 units. It was the
fourth consecutive month that the company
has reported a record sales total.
Montgomery-made
Sonata and Elantra sedans led the way again, with each model topping 20,000
vehicles sold for the month.
“Sales
continued to gain momentum as the month progressed and we finished the Labor
Day holiday weekend strong,” said Bob Pradzinski, HMA’s vice president of
national sales.
The
recently redesigned Sonata saw sales rise 25 percent over last year.
But
the other locally made car, the Elantra, actually outsold it in August. That’s
despite the fact that the Montgomery plant is making mostly Sonatas to keep up
with demand for the new model. It’s churning out about two Sonatas
for every Elantra.
And
it’s building a lot of them. Working around the clock on weekdays and twice on
Saturday, workers here rolled out 35,559 vehicles last month. That was just 200
cars shy of the most they’ve built in a single month so far this year.
Hyundai
Motor Manufacturing Alabama spokesman Robert Burns said the plant will work two
Saturdays again this month to help keep dealers supplied.Source
