Hyundai appears close to
adding a compact pickup to its U.S. lineup.
Car and Driver reported last
week that company officials are expected to approve production of a truck to
take on the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Hyundai Motor America CEO
Dave Zuchowski told the magazine that approval for the Santa Fe SUV-derived
truck could come as early as this fall. But Hyundai later said only
that a decision on whether to build the truck is expected in the fall.
The
pickup would be based on the Santa
Cruz concept shown in January at the Detroit auto show.
Zuchowski
also told the Detroit Free Press that he is pushing to have the truck's
development and launch accelerated, even if it means delaying some other
programs.
