Hyundai Doubles Down on Fuel Cell Technology With New SUV

The proposed market-leading SUV will have a 500-mile range.

Despite being the first automaker to mass-produce fuel cell vehicles, Hyundai has trailed behind its Japanese rivals—Honda and Toyota—in fuel cell vehicle sales for several years. In a move to take back some market share, Hyundai has announced it will unveil a long-range fuel cell SUV sometime next year, Bloomberg reports.

Kim Sae-hoon, head of fuel cell research at both Hyundai and Kia—an affiliate of Hyundai—said that the new SUV will debut alongside a new fuel cell bus during the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang next year. This week, though, Hyundai will have a long-range fuel cell SUV on display at the Seoul Motor Show. This SUV will feature a range of roughly 500 miles, according to the report.

One of the reasons why Hyundai has trailed in the wake of Toyota with respect to fuel cell vehicles sales is due to an undeveloped fuel cell infrastructure in South Korea and the high cost of its fuel cell cars overseas, Bloomberg reports. Speaking at Hyundai's fuel cell research and development center in Mabuk, Kim said, "We want to lead the changes in terms of technology. When there is industrial restructuring and emergence of new technologies, it gives a new opportunity to us."

Compared to Toyota, which sold 2,050 Mirais—the brand's fuel cell vehicle—Hyundai only sold 242 of its ix35 fuel cell vehicles. And at least in South Korea, the infrastructure just isn't quite there yet to support the proliferation of fuel cell-powered cars, compared to Japan. For comparison, South Korea may have 10 hydrogen charging stations, but they're all for research and not for commercial use. Japan, on the other hand, already has 79 charging stations with 12 more in the works.

Despite being behind its Japanese rivals for fuel cell adoption, South Korea is setting itself up for change. In August, the country created a government-industry group to set up 100 charging stations in the country, get 10,000 fuel cell vehicles on the road, and export 14,000 fuel cell vehicles abroad by 2020. Another committee has also been set up to aid in the widespread adoption of fuel cell vehicles across the country.

Hyundai's New N-Brand Performance Car Ready To Burn Rubber

Sometimes, given its fast climb over the past decade, it’s hard to remember that Hyundai Motor celebrates only its 50th anniversary this year. That’s one reason the brand can seem “late” to certain traditional milestones already achieved by other carmakers that have a 100-year history.

Hyundai will hit one of those milestones later this year with the introduction of the first vehicle in its N-brand performance line. Many automakers have performance lines. They are the fast-moving, tight-cornering versions of existing models, with souped-up engines, stiffer suspensions and other improvements targeted at buyers for whom driving is a joyful experience, not merely a method of getting around.

Typically, these performance brands also have a higher sticker price, which adds to the profitability of the overall lineup. In a larger sense, a performance brand adds prestige to an automaker and often goes hand-in-hand with, or is the outgrowth of, an automaker’s racing operation, which is another station of the cross of a mature automaker.

Mercedes-Benz has the AMG performance brand. BMW has the M badge. Audi has the S and RS lines. Nissan has Nismo. Now, Hyundai has the N brand. The N stands for “Namyang,” site of Hyundai’s biggest R&D center, about 45 minutes south of its Seoul, South Korea, headquarters.

Hyundai has promised that its first N-brand vehicle – a high-performance version of its i30 hatchback, one of its most popular cars in Europe – will hit the streets soon. It’s fitting that it’s the i30 and it’s Europe. Europe is home to the world’s most demanding, and probably most accomplished, driving enthusiasts.

If you’re a rich European auto enthusiast, you hit the autobahn in your $120,000 Benz AMG. If you’re like the rest of us, you chase the AMG in your hot hatch. A hot hatch is exactly what it sounds like – a hatchback that’s been tuned to go really fast. The king of European hot hatches forever has been the Volkswagen Golf R, though the Ford Focus RS gives it a good run.

If Hyundai is going to establish itself with a hot hatch as the cornerstone of its N performance brand, it has to go right at the Golf, and the i30 is in the same segment. The i30 has good genes – it was the first Hyundai to be a European car of the year finalist. Now, with a 2.0-liter, 275hp turbocharged engine and a dual-clutch racing transmission, the i30N looks to run with the Golfs and Focuses on the autobahn. To head its N-brand line, Hyundai hired Albert Biermann, the former head of BMW’s M division.

Hyundai’s launch of the N-brand is the third leg of its attempt to establish its performance bona fides. The effort began when Hyundai re-entered racing in 2013, when it announced its return to the World Rally Championship circuit. Hyundai had dabbled in rally car racing earlier in its life, but had outsourced the effort, had little success and gave up in 2003. Ten years later -- and 10 years more technically proficient -- Hyundai came back with an in-house motorsport team, built its own headquarters in Germany and hired the best personnel it could from other teams. This time, Hyundai has won races, and currently sits in second place in the WRC standings, trailing only – naturally – Volkswagen.

Hyundai’s second important step in proving its performance ambitions was the 2013 opening of a shimmering, polished-steel auto garage at Germany’s legendary Nurburgring, a 13-mile race track that twists and turns and climbs and falls through the forest. Driver Jackie Stewart dubbed the track “the green hell.” Hyundai’s i30N was put through its paces in last year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race.

Hyundai raised its garage on prime real estate at the track – overlooking the start-finish line – in a clear announcement of intent to the rest of the auto brands. Testing your cars at the ‘ring, as it’s called, is a high-performance stamp of approval for gearheads the world-around.

Now, finally, Hyundai completes the third leg of its performance strategy by putting performance cars on the street. Hyundai promises additional N-brand versions of its cars, including some in its new stand-alone luxury line, Genesis.

Mid-Sized Hyundai Ioniq Tops Greenest Car List

For the first time in the last ten years, a mid-sized vehicle has achieved the top spot in the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy's "Greenest Cars" list. The mid-sized Hyundai Ioniq topped the list with a highest ever green score of 64, followed closely by the BMW i3 in a list dominated by electric vehicles.

In the last 10 years, the top spot has been claimed only by compact or subcompact vehicles, so Ioniq's first place is quite a feat. The Ioniq is expected to hit the market initially with a 110-mile range, but Hyundai has already mentioned the possibility of a 200-plus-mile version in the future. A hybrid version of the Ioniq will also be available and scores comparably to other vehicles on the Greenest List.

"Anyone buying a new car now has plenty of options for making an environmentally smart decision," said Eric Junga, Transportation Research Analyst at the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE), which runs the greenercars.org website. "Whether you are looking to purchase the greenest car available, or the greenest vehicle for your needs such as a minivan, or simply stay away from the bottom of the list, greenercars.org can help you."  

In ranking the vehicles, each car on the list was given a whole number Green Score based on an environmental damage index (EDX), which estimates pollution from vehicle manufacturing, the production and distribution of fuel, and vehicle tailpipe emissions.

The greenercars.org website also has a list of vehicles that are considered "greener" as well as those considered "meaner" for the environment, the latter including vehicles that the organization considers as being the worst for the environment. As you might guess, that list is dominated by gas-only vehicles that aren't very good at the pump.

For its part, the first place Ioniq is also the first vehicle to offer three distinct electrified powertrains on a single, dedicated platform. In addition to the Ioniq EV taking home first, there will also be Ioniq Hybrid and Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid models available.

"Ioniq will attract an entirely new group of eco- and efficiency-oriented buyers in the U.S. market," said Mike O'Brien, vice president of Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "With outstanding powertrain flexibility, design, connectivity, and advanced technologies, Ioniq meets the needs of a large and growing group of buyers needing a highly efficient, enjoyable to drive, low-emissions vehicle without compromise to their daily lifestyles."

The driving experience inside Ioniq is enhanced through state-of-the art connectivity features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Blue Link, as well as wireless charging for smartphones. Even more, the seven-inch TFT instrument cluster displays all key driver information with outstanding resolution. Ioniq also offers the very latest in advanced safety technologies.

Other vehicles on the list also performed very well when it came to being environmentally friendly. Toyota's Prius lineup's lithium-ion Prius Eco variant nabbed the third spot, while the new plug-in Prius Prime and Prius C claimed spots eight and nine. The Fiat 500E and the Nissan Leaf took home the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV may have taken home the sixth spot, but could have the greatest market impact of any vehicle on the Greenest list. The Bolt is the first EV with a range of more than 200 miles to make the Greenest List, and at $29,995 after federal tax credits, it opens the EV market to more buyers.

Two hybrid vehicles; the Honda Accord Hybrid and the Kia Niro Hybrid, claim 11th and 12th position, rounding out the list.

For the second consecutive year, the Greenest List is completely populated by plug-in and hybrid vehicles and contains no vehicle with solely an internal combustion engine. The Mitsubishi Mirage scores the highest of any purely gasoline-powered vehicle, narrowly missing a spot on this year's list with a Green Score just below the Niro's.

"For the second year in a row, plug-in electric vehicles---all-electrics and plug-in hybrids--dominate the Greenest List, proving that these vehicles are really coming into their own," said Junga. "Even the all-electrics are associated with significant emissions, however, arising from vehicle production and the electricity used for charging. It's notable that conventional hybrids continue to be environmentally competitive with the plug-ins, taking four of the Greenest slots."

High Wycombe, 17 March 2017 – Hyundai Motor has been named Green Manufacturer of the Year and producer of the Best Plug in Car (0g/km), highlighting the brand and its model range as the stand-out environmentally-friendly option for fleet operators. The prestigious awards from leading business automotive title Fleet News recognises Hyundai Motor’s commitment to eco-friendly practices that enhance the lives of its customers while providing cost-effective motoring options to fleet operators.

A panel of expert judges consisting of fleet managers, leasing companies, pricing guides and Fleet News praised Hyundai Motor’s environmental considerations in everything the manufacturer does. HYUNDAI SONATA AWARDED BEST ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE AND BEST ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE IN CLASS BY AUTOMOTIVE SCIENCE GROUP



FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., March 22, 2017 – The 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has been recognized for class-leading performance and value by Automotive Science Group (ASG), earning their “Best All-Around Performance” honor, while the Sonata earned their “Best Economic Performance” honor in the full-size sedan category, besting 106 other models. Review: Hyundai’s Elantra Sport—it’s hot stuff



“I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain…”

James Taylor lyrics?

Of course.

However, today’s test car, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport, has experienced those conditions, too. Plans for our test driving didn’t include a trial by fire, but that’s what happened when we woke up to our Elantra covered with ashes.

A major brush fire in Collier County, Fla., not far from the (in)famous Alligator Alley, covered large areas of Naples with an acrid smoke pushing across town toward the Gulf of Mexico. Neighborhoods near us were evacuated. Some homes were destroyed.

Adding to the Elantra’s distress was a dousing from the condo association’s sprinkler system, which covered the Elantra with untreated well water—a rain of sorts that turned the ash into a paste-like mess.

However, like a lot of us, the Elantra cleaned up nicely. This Sport version is one of four Elantra variants and, as the name suggests, is the sportiest.

Our test vehicle had a base price (MSRP plus destination) of $23,585. A $2,400 Premium package and $125 Sport-branded carpeted mats brought the bottom line to $26,110.

Here’s what you get for that price:


  •     A Sport model-specific 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. That sends the power to the front drive wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
  •     Sport-specific styling cues, including a black hexagonal grille with turbo badge, pronounced side sill extensions, horizontal LED running lights, HID headlights, 18-inch wheels and performance all-season tires, and chrome dual exhaust outlet.
  •     The Premium package adds an 8-inch Navigation screen, premium audio system, Hyundai’s Blue Link connected-car and connected-care systems, power sunroof, blind spot detection and cross-traffic alert, automatic climate control, and auto-dimming rearview mirrors.


Absent on this model is the option for an expanded driver assist system. That’s available by moving sideways to the Limited model, which offers less performance but both a Tech and Ultimate package. Bundle the two and you’ll have smart cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, and a seat-and-mirror memory feature.

We found the Elantra to be large enough to push aside any hesitance about driving a compact.

On the road, the extra engine had plenty of growl (sound-tuned by the Hyundai engineers) and all the power necessary to propel this compact in any situation.

The interior, especially for front-seat passengers, was roomy and, while not upscale, very nice.

Opting for the Sport adds heated leather seats with more aggressive bolsters, red contrast stitching on the flat-bottomed steering wheel, console and seats, and a black headliner. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the package along with a Sport-exclusive gauge package and alloy pedals.

Seats get lot of reader response. The Sport has optional, well-bolstered seats with three manual adjustments. We found them comfortable, but we’ve learned one size doesn’t fit all no matter how many adjustments you can make.

The dashboard has a lot of hard surfaces, but they have a nice style (read: not chintzy) and the center stack and gauge packages are both easy to read and easy to use.

The front doors are good-sized, making for easy entry and egress, and you’ll find the standard-issue cupholders and door pockets. A cubby at the base of the center stack can hide a phone or other valuables.

While traveling this winter, we found it’s a good thing to leave the interior of vehicles empty (or valuables hidden).

Thieves were around in several areas we visited; however, they seemed to be more interested in grabbing cash and personal goods from the vehicles than in of making off with the entire car.

Our neighbor Don realized one day that all the change he’d tossed in his cupholders had been taken. Investigating further, he found a high-tech LED flashlight the culprit had dropped under his seat.

“All-in-all, it seems to be a fair trade,” he says. “I can use the flashlight, but it’s a reminder to lock the doors when you’re parked outside. Back home, I leave my car in the garage, and it’s almost always unlocked.”

In this case, his unlocked Honda Accord was parked next to the locked Elantra.

Of course, locking items in the trunk is the best option, and there’s ample space back there in the Elantra.

Rear seat passengers don’t have it quite as easy as those up front in the Elantra, but there’s decent leg and headroom for a pair of six-footers.

The Sport has a different rear suspension—a multilink setup with a 15 millimeter stabilizer bar and gas-filled shocks—as compared to the standard torsion-beam axle, coil springs, and shocks on other trim levels.

It combines to give the Sport competent handling, though the suspension, in combination with the lower-profile tires, makes for a stiffer ride, welcomed by some buyers, not by others.

For a test week, the Sport was a lot of fun. For the long haul, we’d recommend the Limited—preferably with the extra driver-assist features—or, to save some cash, the base SE with the Value Edition optional package.

Hyundai can use the Sport as an attention-getter (we loved driving it), but the other versions are must-shop entries in the competitive compact market with the likes of the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Kia Forte, Mazda3, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Corolla.

After all, this car has been tested by fire and rain now.

HYUNDAI MOTOR MANUFACTURING ALABAMA CELEBRATES 5 MILLIONTH ENGINE MILESTONE



Montgomery, Ala., – On Tuesday, March 14, 2017, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) celebrated the 5 millionth engine to be manufactured at the Alabama assembly plant. Engine shop Team Members and HMMA leadership gathered for a luncheon to celebrate this significant achievement.

The 5 millionth engine milestone comes less than 12 years after the plant assembled its first Lambda six-cylinder engine in May 2005. The engine shops achieved this milestone faster than any other engine assembly operation in the southeast because they have been supplying two automotive assembly plants since 2010.

“We would not have been able to celebrate this milestone if it weren’t the tremendous support of all our engine production and maintenance team members,” said Chris Susock, vice president – production at HMMA.  “They have a history of collaborating together to get the job done with an absolute priority on safety, efficiency and the best quality for their customers.”

HMMA’s two engine shops currently manufacture the Nu 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine and the Theta 2.0- and 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engines. These engines are supplied to both HMMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia.

Together, HMMA’s two engine shops have a capacity of more than 700,000 engines per year. The two shops employ more than 700 Team Members. The engine shops operate on two 10-hour shifts each day, with production running five or six days per week.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq: The Most Efficient Hybrid You Can Buy


If you're familiar with Hyundai you already know the automaker's modus operandi: offer a similar (or superior) product at a lower price than the competition. The company has always been a price leader, though when it entered the U.S. market 30 years ago it quickly gained a "you get what you pay for" reputation. Throughout the 1990s I was as skeptical as anyone regarding Hyundai's quality. Then I drove a 2000 Elantra for a year as part of a long-term test. The car cost under $9,000, or about 20 percent less than competitive Japanese models, yet it performed flawlessly for 12 months and 20,000 miles. That's when I knew Hyundai had transformed itself from a price leader to a value leader.

Almost two decades later Hyundai's template remains the same: build a fully-competitive model and price it substantially less than the competition. The big difference between 2000 and today is Hyundai's ability to extend that philosophy to an advanced hybrid and electric car like the all-new 2017 Hyundai Ioniq. Yes, I said hybrid and electric car because the Hyundai Ioniq comes in both forms, with the Ioniq Hybrid further available as either a traditional hybrid or a plug-in version.

The standard Ioniq Hybrid has a 1.56 kilowatt hour (kWh) battery and 32 kilowatt (43 horsepower) motor tied to a 1.6-liter, 104 horsepower engine. Total output is 139 horsepower and its EPA estimated mixed fuel economy in the base "Blue" trim is 58 mpg, making it the most fuel-effient hybrid on the market. At 58 mpg the Ioniq Hybrid is 2 mpg better than the Toyota Prius Eco and 6 mpg better than the standard Prius. The Ioniq Hybrid's starting price is $23,035 while the Prius starts at $25,570 and the Prius Eco starts at $26,030. Superior performance, substantially lower price point. Sound familiar?

Stepping up to the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid nets you the same 1.6-liter, 104 horsepower engine, but now it's tied to a 45 kW (60 horsepower) motor and an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged from the grid. The plug-in model can travel up to 27 miles in pure electric mode. Pricing and mpg figures haven't been released for the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid yet, but it will reach showrooms in September.

The Ioniq Electric is a pure EV using an 88 kW (118 horsepower) motor powered by a 28 kWh battery. With a 124-mile range the Ioniq Electric has about half the range of the Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles), but Hyundai reps were quick to point out the Ioniq Electric's starting price of $30,335, or about $7,000 below the Bolt. Roll in another $10,000 in federal and state EV credits and you can get into an Ioniq Electric for right around $20,000. As Hyundai's reps put it, "You can get a fully-loaded Ioniq EV for less than the starting price of Chevrolet's Bolt."

Looking beyond the Ioniq's basic price and fuel efficiency specs is important because consumers are no longer impressed by high mpg figures alone. Alternative fuel vehicles remains a tiny sliver (roughly 3%) of the total U.S. car market. They're far from mainstream, and automakers looking to leverage hybrid and electric vehicles to meet ever-rising government mpg standards can't do it with cars that only appeal to 3% of the market. This is all compounded by the price of fuel that, when measured against inflation and cost-of-living figures, is about as cheap as it's ever been. Thus the following statement is more true than ever: Car companies can't just make an earth-friendly car. They have make a great car that also happens to be earth friendly.

So, is the new Hyundai Ioniq a great car?

It can certainly make some great claims, beyond being the most fuel-efficient hybrid available in the U.S. First, it's Hyundai's first dedicated "green" vehicle, meaning it was meant to be an alternative fuel vehicle from day one of the engineering process. This is also why the Ioniq can offer three unique powertrains, why its center of gravity is so low, why it's cabin volume is so high (it's got more interior space than the Prius or any EV on the market) and why its coefficient of drag is the best in the industry (0.24).

The Ioniq's internal combustion engine has the industry's highest thermal efficiency at 40%, and the Ioniq Electric has a 136 MPGe rating, the highest of any EV. It's also the first EV with a lifetime warranty on the battery. From a features standpoint the car boasts an impressive array of mechanical and electronic devices. It uses a dual-clutch, 6-speed transmission instead of the soul-sapping CVTs found in so many hybrids. It's got a standard 7-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and standard HD radio with SiriusXM satellite radio reception. A wide array of luxury and advanced safety features, from smart cruise control to LED headlights to a sunroof and a premium audio system, can be added to the Ioniq while keeping its price between $25,000 and $35,000.

Does all this add up to a car that can break through the non-greenies and appeal to mainstream consumers? That's a tough call to make in a market where gas is cheap and 63 percent of new vehicle sales go to trucks and SUVs. But the Ioniq's large interior space gives it SUV-like flexibility, and the dual-clutch transmission combines with a sporty suspension tune and impressive low-end torque (courtesy of those electric motors) to make it far more engaging than your standard hybrid or electric.

All of that doesn't guarantee Hyundai's Ioniq will resonate with average consumers, but it's got the best chance (along with Chevrolet's Bolt) of any alternative vehicle currently on the market.

What You Learn After Driving the Hyundai Elantra Sport

This car is better than you think it would be.

I wasn't expecting much of the Elantra Sport.

Before the Sport, I had been in a couple other versions of the Elantra. They were fine cars, but they weren't memorable. Usually, a car leaves at least one lasting impression on you, but these cars weren't close.

Wait, no! There was one impression: the material on the steering wheel made this terrible sound when you'd move your hands on it, like when a wetsuit is stuck to your skin and you're trying to take it off but it won't come off. Neoprene It happened every time I turned the wheel, which is frequent, as there are many times you need to make the car turn so you don't hit things.

I had told a friend who works at Hyundai about this, and he insisted that the Elantra Sport would surprise me. "Of course he'll say this," I said to myself. "He works at Hyundai. He's not going to say a negative thing."

Turns out, even though he works at Hyundai, he wasn't shitting me. The Elantra Sport is a genuinely swell car, as long as you know what you're getting. If you get in and expect a C63 AMG or a Focus RS, you'll be disappointed. But if you're shopping for something like a Jetta GLI–a first family sedan that isn't soul crushing–and don't want to be around Volkswagens right now (for various reasons... you watch the news, right?), the Elantra is actually a great choice.

The 201-horsepower turbo four in our test car was linked to a six-speed manual (a dual-clutch is an option). If you're reading this, you want the manual. The throws are pretty short and notchy, and it's well matched to the powertrain. It's actually a pretty good gearbox. Not many automakers are even introducing cars with a manual anymore, so to see one from a brand that isn't necessarily associated with the 'save the manuals' crowd is more than welcome.

The 1.6 liter turbo engine is perky with quick response and little to no turbo lag. The exhaust also makes these great little pops and cracks that don't sound overly fake and produced. Like, y'know, in the F-Type, which sounds more like a fireworks show than a real car.

Ride quality is good too, and it has plenty of grip in the corners (I admittedly didn't push too hard), but the steering lets it down. It's uncommunicative and numb. That's too bad, because you'd love to be able to chuck it into a corner and have faith that the wheel will accurately communicate what's going on with the front end. Not the case here, unfortunately.

Its interior is better than the other Elantras, with a great flat bottom wheel and better seats. It's also better than the last Jetta GLI I drove, which felt too cheap inside for the price VW was asking.

The best part is that at $21,650, the Elantra Sport undercuts the Jetta GLI in price by about $6,000, and I enjoyed driving the Elantra more than I did the Jetta. It does cost more than something like the brilliant Fiesta ST, but I don't really see them as competitors. A Fiesta ST is for someone that's going to autocross it consistently, the Elantra is for someone who might try autocross a couple times.

Don't think of it as a hardcore hot hatch or rally sedan. It doesn't compete with a WRX. The best environment for the Elantra Sport isn't on a track or thrashing through a canyon. It's more for a quick commuter or for someone who wants a fun first family car, or a fun and safe first car.

It's also the best Elantra to get. More power is more better.

The Autonomous IONIQ concept showcases Hyundai Motor’s future mobility vision and gives visitors a chance to experience the technology virtually while the exoskeletons display the future of personal mobility. Hyundai Motor sparks emotions in the high performance area with the thrilling RN30 concept that is building anticipation of the future high performance N models as well as the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC.

New Generation Hyundai i30 Wagon: elegance meets versatility
Geneva is the stage for the unveiling of the New Generation Hyundai i30 Wagon. The new member of the i30 family retains the timeless design of its five-door sibling, adding elegance and versatility to its body style. With 602 litres of space (VDA 211) and 1,650 litres (VDA 214) with the seats folded, the Wagon has one of the largest boots in this segment. Versatility is further enhanced by the additional storage space beneath the boot floor. Full-LED headlamps and vertical LED daytime running lights make for a strong visual appearance.

Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Design Centre Europe, says: “The i30 Wagon speaks the language of the i30 family in terms of design and carries the new Hyundai family identity – the Cascading Grille. Hyundai Motor reveals next generation fuel-cell concept
In Geneva, Hyundai Motor is also unveiling its Future Eco (FE) Fuel Cell Concept, which foreshadows the next generation of hydrogen-powered vehicles. With a range of more than 800 kilometres between refuelling, the FE Fuel Cell Concept represents the next step for Hyundai Motor towards realising its ultimate ambition of creating a zero-emission Hydrogen Energy Society.

Woong Chul Yang, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Company, says: “Hyundai Motor has a heritage of building innovative, fuel-efficient vehicles and aims to become a global leader in sustainable mobility through its leadership in hydrogen fuel-cell technology. Combining the best of both worlds: the IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid joins the line-up
Hyundai Motor is also showcasing the IONIQ line-up with the primary focus on the IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid, due to its imminent arrival at European showrooms in the summer. IONIQ is the world’s first car with three electrified powertrains and part of Hyundai Motor’s global sustainability strategy to launch 14 eco cars by 2020, including five hybrid vehicles, four plug-in hybrid vehicles, four electric vehicles and one fuel-cell electric vehicle.

The IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid combines the new 1.6 GDI four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine with a class-leading thermal efficiency of 40 percent, delivering a maximum power of 105 PS and 147 Nm of torque with a 45 kW (61 PS) electric motor powered by a 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery to enable an electric driving range up to 63 km while reducing CO2 emissions to 26 g/km* and fuel consumption to 1.1 l/100 km* (NEDC combined cycle).

An autonomous IONIQ simulator will also be part of Hyundai’s presence at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. With a sleek design resembling the rest of the IONIQ line-up, the autonomous IONIQ is one of the few self-driving cars being developed to have a hidden LiDAR system in its front bumper instead of on the roof. Two virtual-reality cockpits will give visitors the chance to experience a drive in an autonomous car at the stand.

“With the launch of the IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid we are completing the IONIQ family and making e-mobility more accessible for everyone.” says Jochen Sengpiehl, Vice President Marketing at Hyundai Motor Europe. “With the choice of three electrified powertrains, the IONIQ is an unique offer – with no compromise as regards to great design, driving pleasure and new connectivity features at a competitive price. It’s a car that is truly driven by e-motion.”

For high performance enthusiasts: RN30 concept and i20 Coupe WRC
Hyundai Motor is also showcasing the RN30 concept in Geneva, building anticipation of the future high-performance ‘N’ models. Based on the New Generation Hyundai i30, the RN30 was born as a racing machine featuring a 2.0-litre turbo engine with 380 PS and an all-wheel drive.

Albert Biermann, Head of Vehicle Testing & High Performance Development at Hyundai Motor, says: “The RN30 embodies the concept of a strong, high-performance car that ensures dynamic, sporty driving. Soon to evolve into our first N model, the RN30 is inspired by our passion to provide a high-performance car that everybody can enjoy effortlessly.”

Hyundai Motorsport is also presenting its current i20 Coupe WRC challenger at the Geneva Motor Show. Based on the Hyundai i20 Coupe, it has been developed to meet the WRC’s 2017 technical regulations, which have given designers greater aerodynamic freedom.

Team Principal Michel Nandan says: “The changes will raise the level of entertainment in the WRC all over the world, with wider and more powerful cars. We have been putting our experience from two complete WRC seasons into practice as we aim to build on our successful 2016 campaign.”

A personal mobility revolution with advanced wearable robots
H-MEX, HUMA and H-WEX are Hyundai Motor’s latest innovations in advanced assistive medical, work and daily life exoskeletons. On show at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, they facilitate personal mobility beyond the automobile. The H-MEX (Hyundai Medical Exoskeleton) helps patients with lower spinal-cord injuries to regain the ability to walk. HUMA (Hyundai Universal Medical Assist) exoskeleton provides assisted mobility support for people with limited muscular power. Meanwhile, the H-WEX (Hyundai Waist Exoskeleton) provides upper-body and hip support to prevent back injuries for workers doing repetitive manual work or heavy lifting.

March 7, 2017 – Hyundai Motor today unveiled its futuristic FE Fuel Cell Concept that looks ahead to the next generation of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Having established itself as a global leader for hydrogen transportation, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to fuel cell vehicle development at the Geneva Motor Show 2017. The FE Fuel Cell Concept represents the next step for Hyundai Motor toward realizing its ultimate ambition of creating a zero-emission Hydrogen Energy Society.

In early 2017 at the Davos World Economic Forum, Hyundai Motor Company joined the launch of the Hydrogen Council, a global initiative to promote the development and commercialization of fuel cell cars as an alternative to fossil fuel vehicles. This follows two decades at the forefront of hydrogen vehicle development, most recently with the ix35 Fuel Cell (Tucson Fuel Cell in some markets), which in 2013 became the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-powered vehicle, and is currently on sale in 17 countries around the world.

The FE Fuel Cell Concept continues Hyundai Motor’s commitment to fuel cell vehicle development and is part of the company’s eco-vehicle program that will see 14 or more new environmentally-focused models introduced by 2020. Spurred on by greater global demand for fuel-efficient, eco-friendly vehicles, the program continues the example of innovation set by IONIQ, the first car to offer a choice of three electrified powertrains in a single body type.

The FE Fuel Cell Concept’s flowing form is inspired by nature and water – the car’s only emission – with the clean and calm design emphasizing its non-polluting nature. Across the car, form follows function to deliver a minimalist style. Exemplifying this approach, the FE Concept features a dramatic and stylish rear air foil and integrated vents that provide aerodynamic efficiency through intelligent engineering.

The concept’s name ‘FE’ stands for Future Eco, reflecting the innovative new technologies that complement the car’s eco-friendliness – a recognition of its unique fuel source. One of the most notable characteristics of the new concept is its internal air humidifier, which recycles water emitted by the car’s clean hydrogen energy circulation to create a more comfortable cabin environment.

The FE Concept showcases Hyundai Motor’s fourth generation of hydrogen fuel cell technology, an evolution of research, development and real-world evaluation programs around the world. When compared with the current generation system used in the Tucson ix35 Fuel Cell, the new technology is 20% lighter, and achieves 10% greater efficiency. In addition, the power density of the fuel cell stack is increased by 30%, boosting the car’s range significantly.

As another reinforcement of the car’s eco-credentials and focus on customer convenience, the FE Concept features portable battery packs – charged by the car’s energy output – to power passenger devices. Meanwhile, the trunk features an integrated storage and charging space for an electric scooter, demonstrating how Hyundai Motor is developing mobility solutions to match future lifestyles.

The new concept car is more than simply beautiful and innovative; it is highly capable too. The car is designed to run for more than 800 kilometers between refueling, acknowledging the current limited hydrogen infrastructure. Elements of the FE Fuel Cell Concept will influence an SUV Fuel Cell model set for launch in 2018, which will feature advanced ‘Hyundai Smart Sense’ driver assistance technologies, alongside an extensive hydrogen-powered range.

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA SETS RECORD FEBRUARY SALES

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., March 1, 2017 – Hyundai Motor America today announced its best February ever, with sales totaling 53,020 for the month.
